What changed
| Program | Amount | Status in the October release |
|---|---|---|
| Earlier program | $6 billion | Completed |
| New program | $20 billion | Authorized, multiyear |

Why care
Our interpretation: retiring shares can spread earnings across fewer shares, but that does not itself improve the underlying business. Judge the purchase price and the remaining financial flexibility alongside any per-share benefit.
The strongest counterargument
A flexible authorization can be useful precisely because management is not committed to spending it on a fixed schedule. An open timetable is not, by itself, a weakness.
What to watch next
At the next quarterly update, compare repurchase spending, shares outstanding and cash generation. Separate changes in total earnings from changes caused by the share count.
Useful takeaway: track completed capital returns. Read our M&T earnings brief for another way share count can change an earnings headline.
